Opinions about a beginners surfboard — concerning cost & durability — are definitely not in short supply. Beginner surfboards, according to one group, should be extremely inexpensive. In addition, they believe new surfers should expect to bash up their boards and have them swapped out MANY, MANY times. Of course, then there is the second group, which happens to have a wholly different take on the subject. They believe a surfers 1st board ought to be EXTREMELY tough as well as comfortable so it (and the surfer) can withstand the rough times ahead. After all, how else is a surfer expected to get better at surfing?

Apart from the many opinions and mumbo-jumbo that’s out there, it really just comes down to 2 things: personal preference and budget. Choosing a extremely resilient beginners surfboard, which just costs a bit more, isn’t really a lousy idea — and do not let anyone tell you differently. After all, provided you can afford it, why not get a surf board which is more resistant to scratches & dents? On the other hand, if you’re low on cash and have that sixth-sense feeling that you’re going to wipe out again and again (which isn’t uncommon), then don’t feel compelled to spend Half-a-Grand on a new, never-been-used beginners surfboard. Just throw down $160, get yourself a standard board, and then paddle out to those glorious waves.

Will this cheaper type of surfboard need to be replaced later? Well, yeah, of course you’ll have to buy a replacement board eventually. BUT don’t you think this is a better option than simply waiting around and trying to save up for some super expensive surf board? Most people would rather surf with a low quality board NOW than wait who knows how long and surf with an expensive board LATER.

Three Tips For Choosing A Beginners Surfboard…

- Big And Thick. I know, I know — all those sensational looking surfer dudes and dudets are tearing it up on super sleek, ultra smooth boards and you want to be like them, right? It may break your heart to hear this, but it has to be said regardless: you are not YET an ultra cool surfer guy. The only way you’re gonna develop as a surfer is if you practice using what all others practiced with: massive, thick surfboards. This will help to give you maximum buoyancy and help make paddling a lot of easier.

Be honest with yourself, would you rather be using an enormous, thick surf board which makes surfing easier & safer (not to mention betters your technique) OR a narrow, ultra sleek board (like all the “cool kids” use) which in turn solely improves your ability to WIPEOUT?

- Consider The Softboard. As far as beginner surfboards go, this is the best possible choice for an aspiring young surfer. Why, you ask? Because they’re soft of course! A number of companies create these types of surfboards and they can sometimes be ordered online. Surfing with DECREASED chance of accidents and trips to the emergency room — what more could an aspiring young surfer ask for?

- Don’t Focus On Shape. Tail shape is pretty much a non-issue at the moment, and the same goes for your boards fins, however many there may be. Currently, you’re probably NOT the most skilled surfer around. In fact, it may not be unfair to say you stink — and stink pretty bad. Of course, that’s the idea, isn’t it? You’re new to surfing and are just wishing to learn how to surf safely and effectively — nothing more, nothing less. Its not necessary to know anything else about surfboards except for this: they have terrific buoyancy (the decent ones anyway), which when combined with your surfing talents will allow you to ride enormous waves.
