Becker Surfboards

Beginning surfers often ask what surfboard is best to learn on. When asking around, you will certainly hear that longer and bigger surfboards are easier to learn on. But rather than get a 10ft longboard, I recommend new surfers get an 8ft funboard design and here are a few reasons why.

One of the things you must consider is for how long the surfboard will be a good fit for you. You wouldn’t want to buy a surfboard that was only good for a few months. As a beginning surfer you will want a surfboard that is stable and wide so you can stand up easily. You will also want a longer board because they make it easier to catch waves. But… if you get a board that is long and wide it will be harder to turn on, and you might want to start working on your turning before too long. A funboard surfboard offers more opportunity to turn much easier, which will allow you to continue to ride the same board for a longer amount of time as you get better at surfing.

A second thing you should consider is that bigger surfboards are harder to paddle out on. For beginner surfers, paddling out into waves can be difficult and a bigger board will get pushed more by waves. It will be easier for beginner surfers to paddle into the waves with a smaller board. A funboard has a pointier shape and so even though it might only be one foot shorter, there could be up to 1/3 less material in the board, and that means less push back from the waves.

One final factor to consider is how easy it is to handle the surfboard you will get. Some beginner surfers don’t consider what they will do with a surfboard when they are out of the water. You have to have someplace to store it, some way to get it to the beach and then you have to carry it to ocean once you park. It is hard to find a place to keep a 10ft surfboard when you have 9ft ceilings and unless you have a big pickup truck, it can be a pain to strap a big board to the top of a car. An 8ft funboard surfboard is much easier to handle logistics wise, which can make the entire experience more fun for the beginner surfers.

I hope this helps provide some insight into what surfboard that is best for beginner surfers and that after reading it you see the benefit of a funboard rather than longboard design. Of course, there are other factors to take into account. How familiar you are with board sports, what the waves are like where you are from and your body size all play a factor as well, so you will have to adjust accordingly. If you would like some more help finding a good surfboard, there is a great tool to help you find one of the best surfboards for beginners, which will help narrow down your search. It will ask you some questions about your surfing experience and what the waves are like where you are from and make a recommendation. Thanks for reading and enjoy your time surfing. If you ever see me out in the water, feel free to say hi.
